How do I check whether my food label complies with Regulation (EU) 1169/2011?

Upload clear photos of every side of the packaging to LegaTrack Food. The AI reads the label, checks it against Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 and returns a structured report within minutes: per checkpoint compliant, attention or non-compliant, with the legal article and reasoning. You can try it once for free without an account via the free trial.

Which particulars are mandatory on a food label in the EU?

Article 9 of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 lists the mandatory particulars: the name of the food, the ingredient list, allergens, the quantity of certain ingredients (QUID), the net quantity, a best-before or use-by date, any special storage or use conditions, the name and address of the responsible food business, the country of origin where required, instructions for use where needed, the actual alcoholic strength for beverages above 1.2% alcohol, and a nutrition declaration. Exceptions apply: for example, Article 16(4) exempts beverages above 1.2% alcohol from the mandatory ingredient list and nutrition declaration. LegaTrack Food checks these points automatically.

Which allergens must be emphasised on an EU food label?

Annex II of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 lists 14 allergens that must be emphasised in the ingredient list (for example in bold): cereals containing gluten, crustaceans, eggs, fish, peanuts, soybeans, milk, nuts, celery, mustard, sesame, sulphur dioxide/sulphites above 10 mg/kg or 10 mg/l (expressed as total SO₂), lupin and molluscs. LegaTrack Food verifies that each allergen present is declared and emphasised.

In which language must a food label be written?

Article 15 of Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 requires a language easily understood by consumers in the country of sale — in practice almost every EU member state requires its own official language(s). In LegaTrack Food you select your export countries and instantly see which label languages are required and whether they appear on the label.

How reliable is the AI check — and who remains responsible?

The AI substantiates every finding with the relevant legal article and its reasoning, so you can verify each conclusion yourself. Misread values can be corrected manually, after which the analysis can be run again. The report is decision support, not legal advice: the food business remains responsible for the final label.

Who is LegaTrack Food for?

For anyone who has to get food labels right: quality and QA staff at food producers, bakeries and catering businesses, private-label suppliers, importers, and non-EU companies bringing products to the European market. No prior legal knowledge is needed — every checkpoint is explained in plain language.
